Two bets, one stake

An each-way bet is two bets wearing one stake

Each-way does not mean a bet that wins partly. It means the stake is halved into two separate bets — one on the selection to win, one on it to place — with the place part settling at a fraction of the win price. The terms of that fraction and the number of places paid are published with the market, and they change the outcome more than the price does.

The split

A 10.00 each-way bet is not a 10.00 bet that can pay half. It is two bets of 5.00 — a 5.00 win bet and a 5.00 place bet — struck at the terms published with the market. Seeing it that way makes every each-way outcome predictable.

Win half Win half

Settles at the full price on the slip if the selection wins. If it places without winning, this half loses.

5.00 at the win price
Place half Place half

Settles at the win price multiplied by the place fraction if the selection finishes within the paid places.

5.00 at price x fraction

Three results are possible, and all three are visible in the arithmetic: the selection wins and both halves pay; it places without winning, so the win half is lost and the place half pays; it finishes outside the places, so both halves are lost. Nothing else happens, including in the important case where it places — which is the outcome people most often misread.

Fraction and places

Two numbers define an each-way market, and both are published alongside it rather than in general rules. The first is the fraction: the proportion of the win price the place half receives. The second is the number of places that are paid. Together they decide whether the place half covers the win half's loss, and that relationship is the whole of the arithmetic.

How the two published numbers interact
Place fractionPlaces paidWhat it means for the place half
A quarter of the win priceTwo or three places, depending on the fieldA modest recovery: the place half pays relatively little
A fifth of the win priceFour or five placesA wider net and a smaller return for the same price
A fraction of a shorter priceA small number of placesSmall in absolute terms, because the win price itself is short
A fraction set by the marketDefined per race or per eventAlways read from the market you are backing, not from a general habit

The trap is intuitive: longer place terms sound better and are usually worse, because a fifth of the price paid across more places is a smaller return than a quarter of it paid across fewer. The published terms describe the market, and the market has already priced them into the win price on offer.

Reduced places

When the field shrinks — because selections withdraw — the number of places paid can fall, and the market is published with reduced terms or re-formed entirely. This is the same mechanism that produces non-runner deductions, and it is decided by rules rather than at the point of settlement.

Settles as
  • Reduced place terms, published for the re-formed market, applied to bets struck on that market
  • Non-runner deductions applied to the win price where the rules provide for them
  • Returned at the stake where the withdrawal leaves too few selections for the market to stand
Does not settle as
  • Place terms silently kept at the original figure when the field no longer supports them
  • Place half settled at full win odds, which would be a win bet rather than a place bet
  • Both halves settled as a win because the selection was in the paid places, which is a separate outcome

The pattern from the previous page: an each-way bet is a market, and markets are re-priced when the conditions they were built on change. The terms printed at the time of the bet are the ones that govern it, which is why a screenshot with the terms visible is worth more than a note of the price alone.

What the numbers mean

One habit turns each-way from a guess into arithmetic: before placing, work out whether the place half, at the published fraction, covers the win half's stake if the selection only places. If the place fraction is small and the price is short, it often does not — the each-way adds cost rather than insurance.

That is not a recommendation either way. It is the difference between a bet understood as two bets and a bet understood as a hope, and the published numbers are enough to work it out without knowing the result. The same reading applies to a multiple that includes an each-way selection, where the place half and the win half enter the multiplication as separate prices under the rules.

Betting involves risk and can cause serious financial harm — including debt, damaged relationships and mental-health problems. Understanding how a bet is settled does not make it a good bet: a void bet returns the stake and nothing more, a deduction reduces the return that was displayed when you placed it, and a correction can move a balance down.
